A conference in the heart of Perugia

The conference will take place in the historic heart of Perugia, hosted by the University of Perugia (Università degli Studi di Perugia) in some of its most distinctive academic and historical spaces.

Founded in 1208, the University of Perugia is one of Italy’s oldest universities, and its historic buildings provide a unique setting where centuries of academic tradition meet contemporary research and international scientific exchange.

Conference activities will be held across two main venues: the Aula Magna of the Rectorate at Palazzo Murena and the new Aula Magna of the Department of Law, offering participants the opportunity to experience both the historic centre of the University and its renewed academic spaces.

Palazzo Murena – Rectorate

The main venue of the conference will be the Aula Magna of the Rectorate, located in Palazzo Murena, in Piazza dell’Università, at the heart of Perugia’s historic centre.

Palazzo Murena is one of the most prestigious buildings of the University of Perugia and has been the seat of the Rectorate for many years. Designed and built in the eighteenth century under the direction of architect Carlo Murena, the palace has a long history closely connected with the development of the Studium of Perugia.

The Aula Magna provides an elegant and historic setting for the conference’s plenary activities, combining the atmosphere of a centuries-old university with the international character of a modern scientific meeting. It is also regularly used for major academic and institutional events, including the University’s official ceremonies.

Located just a few steps from the historic centre, Palazzo Murena is ideally situated for discovering Perugia on foot. From the conference venue, participants can easily reach the city’s main squares, monuments, restaurants and cafés, making the conference experience extend well beyond the scientific programme.

Department of Law

Part of the conference programme will take place at the Department of Law, located in Via Alessandro Pascoli, only a short walk from Palazzo Murena.

The Department’s recently renovated Aula Magna offers a contemporary and fully equipped environment for lectures, parallel sessions and other conference activities. The renovation, completed in 2025, was designed with particular attention to both functionality and aesthetics, and the auditorium can accommodate up to 242 participants, with modern technological equipment and enhanced acoustic solutions.

The combination of the historic Rectorate and the renewed spaces of the Department of Law reflects the character of the conference itself: a meeting point between tradition, innovation and international scientific collaboration.

A glimpse into Perugia’s scientific heritage

For participants interested in the history and scientific identity of the University, the conference also offers an opportunity to discover the Department of Chemistry, Biology and Biotechnology (DCBB).

Located in Via Elce di Sotto, the Department is home to teaching and research activities spanning chemistry, biology and biotechnology, as well as modern laboratories and research facilities.

Among its most remarkable features is the Roman mosaic of Santa Elisabetta, preserved within the Department. The mosaic is one of the archaeological treasures connected with the area and offers a fascinating glimpse into the long history of Perugia and its relationship with scientific and cultural heritage.

The presence of this ancient artwork within a contemporary scientific department creates a particularly evocative connection between the past and the present — between the heritage of the city and the research that continues to shape its future.

Discover Perugia

Set on a hill in the heart of Umbria, Perugia is a city made to be discovered on foot. Its compact historic centre brings together centuries of history, art and university life within a remarkably small area — making it the perfect setting for an international conference.

Between sessions, participants can easily explore the city’s medieval streets and squares, walk along Corso Vannucci, or stop for a coffee in one of the many cafés overlooking Piazza IV Novembre, the historic heart of the city. Here, the Fontana Maggiore, the Cathedral of San Lorenzo and the Palazzo dei Priori form one of Perugia’s most iconic urban settings.

Just a few minutes from the conference venues, the historic centre unfolds through narrow streets, ancient stone buildings, hidden corners and panoramic viewpoints over the Umbrian hills. The Rocca Paolina, the medieval aqueduct and the winding streets around the old city offer a glimpse into the layers of history that make Perugia so distinctive.

And then there is the city’s atmosphere: lively, welcoming and unmistakably shaped by its university community. With students and researchers from all over the world, Perugia has always been a place of encounter and exchange — making it a natural setting for an international scientific meeting.

During your stay, we hope you will find a little time between lectures, discussions and social events to step outside the conference venue and experience Perugia itself.
